Fast Car Knoppix

Small can be beautiful! Working with Knoppix for the past two years has been a joy. Two terms to describe this distribution, simple, elegance. See Knoppix is one of the many operating systems that runs from the CD, so it doesnรขโฌโขt have the hardware conflicts associated with many instruction sets between hardware and software.

When first installing it, I could see that it had potential. All of the install routines were smooth. Registers, ship sets, in sync recognition. When you test operating systems daily, you get a certain feel for what works. And then sometimes, the dreaded hiccup. Programs lost itรขโฌโขs way. With Knoppix, no such encounters. Up pops the screen, elegance! Fonts rendered perfectly and clear. Remember, Knoppix is a total operating system on one 700mb CD, not a DVD. Clicked the menu button, small application city.

Small fast editors, check. Bash, check. Mozilla? Sheรขโฌโขs thereรขโฌยฆWhatรขโฌโขs the root file system looks like? Bin, boot, dev, lib, var. Thar she goes! Windows, click. Architectural Rendering

Architectural rendering basically means preparing and presenting a proposed design of a building for the approval of the person who wants to construct it. It may be a commercial or a residential unit. Formerly, the architects and designers would just draw bare outline sketches of the various parts of the building giving their dimensions and how each room/unit of the building was to be juxtaposed with the other. It was almost impossible for you to correlate the built up unit with what you had actually dreamed of.

With the advent of computer aided design (CAD) and the related multimedia based architectural technologies, the process of presenting how the prospective building will actually appear after it is built, has undergone a sea change. Now as the owner of a building, you can virtually see and feel your dream-house at the stage of its conceptualization and planning long before it comes up. You can select a view from a wide spectrum of various designs of the building and colors of paints. You can also suggest changes as per your preferences.

In the past, it was almost impossible to communicate the subtleties of the designs and the shades of colors to the architect as you wanted them. Now, with the advancement of the presentation technologies, especially architectural rendering, it has now become possible to give expression to those subtleties which you always wanted in your dream project. The various permutations and combinations of architectural rendering techniques on the computer screen, a CD or even in print can give a very realistic shape to what you require in a building. Once you see the actual picture, you can get a clear-cut idea if the output is actually what you require or some changes would make it perfect.

Sometimes you just have to give information in electronic design format about your project along with your proposed budget, and you can get various best possible designs to choose from within just a period of one week or so. Computer based architectural rendering technologies have revolutionized the initial stage conceptualization, planning and designing of the project and eliminated the time consuming manual processes of making drawings which failed to come even remotely close to your aspirations of how you would like your dream building to appear.

Architectural Rendering Studios

In recent years, companies have come to appreciate the numerous benefits that outsourcing some of their services can bring them. This is because outsourcing services, like technical support and medical billing, allow companies to provide excellent customer service and other services without having to invest in new infrastructure to provide them. The good news is that there are a number of companies that are more than willing to provide companies with these services, which cover a wide range of services that companies provide their clients. However, outsourcing is not only limited to companies who wish to provide customer services because there are also a wide variety of services that companies can outsource from a number of service providers. One example of this is computer-assisted architectural rendering, which architectural firms can outsource from various architectural rendering studios.

Services they provide

The companies that provide computer-assisted architectural rendering provide the most modern renderings using the most up to date technology in architectural rendering. Usually, these companies use the latest in CAD technology to be able to provide the realistic 3D structure images based on their client's requirements and specifications. By doing so, these companies allow their clients to see the project even before its completions, making it possible to make the modifications that need to be done so that the construction of the project will run smoothly.

In addition to enabling architectural firms see the project before its completion, developers could also use computer-assisted architectural renderings to inform their clients about what the finished structure will look like, which can be very useful, especially in selling condominium units. Moreover, even interior designers can use the services of companies that provide computer-assisted architectural rendering because they would also be able to see how their designs will look like even before construction and use it to experiment with various designs on their computers.

In recent times, people involved in the construction industry, including architects, developers, and interior designers can now outsource computer-assisted architectural renderings from various companies, allowing these people to see a project even before construction begins. This can be very useful because having access to the "finished" project can allow architects, developers, and designers to make modifications to the project before construction to ensure that the project will run as smoothly as possible.

Microsoft Great Plains: Large Scale Implementation

Microsoft Business Solutions Great Plains, Navision, Axapta, Solomon and CRM are coming up to satisfy ERP needs for large corporation, including multinationals. In this article we will be describing Microsoft Great Plains as the MRP platform, fitting to multiple industries and business niches: aerospace, defense, textile, pharmaceutical, healthcare, constructions, mining, services, distributions & logistics, wholesale & retail, public sector, chemicals, oil & gas, finance, brokerage, etc. Weรขโฌโขll try to give you orientation and set realistic expectations if you are CIO for large publicly traded company and looking for reasonably budgeted solution.

รขโฌยข Technical versus Functional implementation. The trend of our new post-recession era is biased toward technical implementation. If you look back to 1990th Clinton golden days รขโฌโ when we would say huge number of CPA-oriented businesses were realizing and implementing mid-size and large accounting applications. Today รขโฌโ accounting department team is comfortable with generic ERP interface and needs minimal training. Usually we train IT people and they in turn provide Great Plains interface and reporting training to the end users, or end users attend online training to get advanced skills in the application interface.

รขโฌยข Technical Customization & Modification. Well รขโฌโ if you remember old-good-days SAP, PeopleSoft, JDEdwards, Oracle ERP systems implementation รขโฌโ you would agree that they required a lot of programmers and developers participation. The same is applicable if you look at Microsoft Great Plains รขโฌโ however we need to make some remarks, related to our new time. First of all รขโฌโ Developers are mow concentrated in the development centers, dispersed across the USA and especially internationally in so-called offshore zones: India, Philippines, Brazil, Russia, Ukraine. We are not talking about China here, because Great Plains is not very popular over there. So, normal situation should be when your have nation-wide consulting company here in the States with regional project managers and Great Plains Dexterity, VBA/Modifier, Integration Manager, eConnect, Crystal Reports, VB.Net and C#.Net developers in Sao Paulo, Moscow or Manila.

รขโฌยข Remote Support. Nowadays technology tries to move us toward the ideal world when you as end-user in Denver could be supported by consultant or developer in Brazil through web session, remote desktop connection, VPN, Skype, VOIP, or other tool. The only requirement is fast internet connection from your and technician side รขโฌโ which is catching up very quickly.

รขโฌยข Multinationals. Multinational corporation has to deal with the following issues: taxes (VAT, GST, Sales Taxes), customs fees, tax filing rules, local chart of accounts regulations (France, Russia), localizations รขโฌโ ERP application should be localized รขโฌโ all the screens should be in local language: Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, French, German, Polish. Microsoft Great Plains is localized for South America, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Poland, Middles East (Arabic language support), Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Nigeria and central Africa

Medical Record Software

Medical records are those records which contain everything there is to know about your past medical history. They contain familial traits, things to which you are allergic, past injuries and diseases, the types of treatment that worked, and so on. Everybody's health and body is unique. Thus, everybody has different and unique health requirements. Medical records are maintained to help doctors know which medication and medical assistance is required for a particular patient.

Medical records also include a written or electronic account of a patient's medical history, the illness the individual currently has, all the details of the medical treatments given, and so on. These records also provide a ready resource for chronological progress notes, and discharge recommendations.

This provides a proper legal document the patient is entitled to read. Electronic medical records come with a lot of advantages, as they facilitate the whole storing and maintenance process. It is also easier to maintain the privacy of the medical records. Security software protects the data and sends a signal when it detects unauthorized viewers. The first and foremost responsibility of medical record storage should be to maintain safety and privacy.

Not only this, applications of various software, namely data management software, application performance management software, and medical document scanning software, make the job even easier for medical professionals.

Electronic medical records gain the upper hand here, as electronic mediums, such as computers, create a virtual space for such storage facilities. The responsibility of maintenance of such spaces and creating buffer zones, virtual drives and virus protection software complements the electronic storage.

Story Development Software: Good or Evil?

In the early days of the personal computer, we're talking the mid-'80s here, there was speculation that someday books would all be writen by computers. It sounded a little too science-fictiony for most writers. After all, words on a page---no matter how well they appear to work together---are meaningless without the insights and experiences of the writer behind them.

At this point in time, I'm happy to report, computers are not writing all our books for us.

However, writing software has progressed far beyond the basic word processing abilities of Word and Word Perfect.

Today, we have a wide variety of story development software. Most can be used to write novels or screenplays, even television scripts or stage plays. Programs such as Truby's Blockbuster or Dramatica Pro teach their own unique approach to story development. Other programs, such as Power Structure, StoryBase, and StoryWeaver provide prompts for help with character, structure, and theme.

They do not write the story for us.

But they are coming closer.

Dramatica Pro, for instance, uses what it refers to as a story engine, that reveals relationships of deep structure independent of subject and content. It takes you by the hand and shows you what character, plot and theme issues you need to address. And finally, it weaves all your plot points together for maximum Dramatica Pro impact.

Truby's Blockbuster helps you find the best story form for your genre work, helps you develop the 7 keys that provide the nucleus for your story, and then lays out the 22 steps of story development to carry your plot from start to finish.

I've used most of these programs at one time or another. While I believe Dramatica Pro has great potential and a unique take on story development, it also has a steep learning curve. Personally, I turn to writing software to save time. If it drains my time to learn how to use it properly, then it defeats its purpose.

Truby's Blockbuster, on the other hand, quickly gets me to the heart of my story and has me putting the pieces together in a relatively short time. I don't use it for all my projects, but find it most helpful for the bigger books.

Could I write without the use of software?

Of course.

Would my stories be better for it?

Probably no better. Probably no worse.

Then what's the point?

The point is this: story development software can serve both good and evil, depending on how you use it. If you rely too heavily on the software, then you defeat the purpose of being a writer, which is to bring your own take on the world into your work. Your stories will likely begin to all read alike, very cookie-cutter and pre-fabbed. You'll be moving us another step closer to the day when computers will write our books for us.

But if you use the software to organize your thoughts, to make the initial brainstorming process quicker and more efficient, without relying too heavily on each and every aspect of the software, then it can serve the good in your work.

Much like the rules of grammar, the rules of struture and story development are there to guide you. Once you thoroughly understand how they work, you're freer to break them. This is when you step forward as a writer, with your own voice, and your own creative approach to writing.

If you'd like to check out some of these programs, here are some good places to get started:

Novel-Writing Programs: http://thesuccessfulwriter.com/novelwritingsoftware/

Screenwriting Programs: http://thesuccessfulwriter.com/screenwritingsoftware/

Whether you decide to use story-development software or not---Steinbeck, Hemmingway, Faulkner and many others did just fine without them---always remember to bring yourself to your work.

That's the only true way you'll ever be an original writer.

Cool File System Class with Thread Support - Easy To Use

FileSystem is a class which will enable you to quickly, easily and efficiently get the content of a given directory. A file system class is an essential part of any code library. Every application does some sort of file interaction, and if you create a nice class to handle interaction between your application and the file system then it will make life a bit easier and you will not need to recreate the wheel a hundred times for each project. Here I will try to provide such a class that you can use in your project. This article is an extension of another article (Automating MS Excel 2003 using Visual Studio .NET), which are both part of the same project. However, I have done some modifications to the code provided here that will make it more generic.

So there are two section to this article, one which will cover the FileSystem class and the other that will cover the application that will use the class to demonstrate some of its features.

Background
No background needed, just be familiar with the C# language, threads, and FileSystemObject.

Using the code
Here I will try to cover the FileSystem class. This class is really simple and self explanatory. It is also well documented. But let's go over it in any case. So we have a class named FileSystem that is used to do some file system operations. Let's take a look at the class:

FileSystem Class

Alright, so we have several files that are used internally by the class. Six of them are available as properties that can be accessed at runtime and a few are set during initialization, i.e., sourcePath and destinationPath.

COPY_STATUS - is used to notify the parent thread about the status of the copy thread.
FILE_FILTER - is used for filtering file types. i.e., *.xml, *.cs, *.xls, etc... if left null it will behave as *.*
NUMBER_OF_DIRECTORIES - returns number of directories in the search. NUMBER_OF_FIELS - returns number of files in the search.
ROOT_PATH - gets or sets the root path to be used for navigation.
STATUS - is the status of the main thread in the FileSystem class.
You also can notice that there are three private methods that are used internally by the class. Two of those methods are used to start a particular thread. And the RecursiveDirectoryNavigation() method is used by the main thread of the FileSystem class to do the navigation, given the rootPath.

To use the copy method of the class you will use one of the two overloaded functions for the constructor and then will call the copyDirectory method which will initiate the startCopyThread to perform the operation. From your main thread you can use the COPY_STATUS property to check on the thread for your next program logic if any.

To use the code, all you need is the following:

CoolFileSystem.FileSystem fileSystem

= FileSystem(@root); That's all it takes! Below you will find code snippets. Of course the full source is available for you to download. Below you can see a portion of the class source.

namespace CoolFileSystem {

public class FileSystem

{

// Used to hold root directory. Start point for the search.

private string rootPath;

...

// Used to filter filename when doing

// the search. By default it is set to "*.xls".

// Can be changed using the FILE_FILTER property.

private string fileFilter = "*.*";

// File list is used internally. It is a list

// of all files found given the search

// criteria. Automatically adjust itself. Default size 500.

private ArrayList fileList = new ArrayList(500);

// Used to store directories found under

// the rootPath. It contains objects of type

// DirectoryStructure which hold

// the Directory Information with a list of files

// under the current directory.

private ArrayList directoryList = new ArrayList(500);

// Used for navigation thru the directory structure.

private Thread mainThread;

...

...

public FileSystem(string path)

{

rootPath = path;

mainThread = new Thread(new ThreadStart(startThread));

mainThread.Start();

}

private void startThread()

{

DirectoryInfo di = new DirectoryInfo(rootPath);

RecursiveDirectoryNavigation( di );

}

...

...

#region RECURSIVE DIRECTORY NAVIGATION

[STAThread]

private void RecursiveDirectoryNavigation( DirectoryInfo di )

{

try

{

// Add the current directory to the directory list

DirectoryStructure ds = new DirectoryStructure();

ds.di = di;

int insertionIndex = 0;

// Let's get files in directory

foreach( FileInfo fi in di.GetFiles(fileFilter) )

{

fileList.Insert(insertionIndex, fi);

ds.fileList.Insert(insertionIndex, fi);

}

directoryList.Add(ds);

foreach( DirectoryInfo d in di.GetDirectories() )

{

RecursiveDirectoryNavigation( d );

}

}

catch {}

finally {}

}

WinXPDisableZeroConfigation.exe or WinXPDisableZeroConfigation

Well that's a long process name! Having just upgraded my network to a 11g network I found that my computers CPU usage was up from around the 3% mark it was now using about 55% some other people have reported much more cpu use than that!. What the heck was going on! I did the ctrl + alt + delete to bring up task manager scrolled down the list there was WinXPDisableZeroConfigation.exe hogging the CPU. I did a quick search on the internet some folk think its a trojan, spyware, adware. What I did find was its installed by the belkin software for the router or wireless card. It comes from software XpDis0Conf belonging to XPDisable0Conf. The file WinXPDisableZeroConfigation.exe can be found C:Program FilesBelkinBelkin 54Mbps Wireless UtilityTOOL if you accepted the default values when installing the belkin software. What I do based on info gained elsewhere is boot up and let WinXPDisableZeroConfigation run once your computer is up and running use task manager ( ctrl + alt + delete ) to end the process. I have not found any problems as yet.

To stop WinXPDisableZeroConfigation.exe from running at startup follow the instructions below. To do this you need to be an Administrator on the machine in question. Please read this first before you start. If this sounds too much for you use the above method using ctrl + alt + delete to end the process.

  • Click start, run
  • In the run box type msconfig and then click ok.
  • Click on the startup tab, should be the last tab on the right Uncheck winxpdisablezeroconfig.exe
  • Then click apply and then OK, reboot computer.
  • Reboot computer.
Using the process above will stop this process from running and should not cause any other problems." Having myself just done the above but without the reboot. All seemed OK. However I have just done a reboot. Once windows loads it gives a message saying You have used the System Configuration Utility to make changes to the way Windows starts. Etc Etc..... Basically put a tick in the tick box and the message will not show again unless you use the System Configuration Utility again for some reason. This is important. Some sypware malware hide up as WinXPDisableZeroConfigation.exe, the real size of WinXPDisableZeroConfigation is 32768 bytes To remove uninstall the Belkin utility and let Windows manage the wireless configuration don't uninstall the drivers for your card. Just let Windows XP do it stuff and you should be OK. Now you have read this read it again just to make sure you understand what you are about to do.

Whats your experiences of WinXPDisableZeroConfigation? Read other peoples experiences here http://www.searchhuts.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=81

Will Adobe Manage to Replace Industry Work Horse Quark XPress by Giving Adobe InDesign for Free?

And kill the best layout software in the process of gaining market share?

*** Heard about the Quark "killer"?

Adobe InDesign CS2. Will it really "kill" Quark? Adobe has been saying "it will" for the last six years or so, but it hasnรขโฌโขt happened. Adobe Pagemaker didnรขโฌโขt kill Quark, either, but was instead replaced by InDesign. And InDesign is also at a distant second place so far.

Letรขโฌโขs start by saying that it would be a good idea to wait for any new purchases or "conversions" until the upcoming release of the next version of Quark XPress.

Some of the features that Quark has unveiled (Job Jackets for example, for workflow streamlining and increased productivity) as part of their new version, in our view are very compelling and offer more value than InDesign.

Other features are necessary updates that fulfill current needs and put it on par with available technologies currently provided by other programs (i.e. transparency support, Open Type font support, etc, so InDesign and Quark have standard common features). There are plenty of reviews out there detailing all the new features of Quark and we encourage you to read them, you will find the new Quark a very useful ally in your road to productivity.

*** Adobe: positioning a product at any cost

Recently Adobe acquired Macromedia, because Adobe couldnรขโฌโขt compete with Macromediaรขโฌโขs web software, another area where Adobe is weak. In our view and that of many people we interviewed, that was the only way Adobe could obtain a leading position in the web design arena: by buying out their competition. The lead Adobe has with Photoshop, doesnรขโฌโขt translate to a lead in other fields.

For the last few years, Adobe has been trying to position InDesign against Quark as the leader in the publishing area without success.

*** Bundling InDesign: the key strategy of Adobe to gain market share

The strategy used by Adobe is very similar to some of the strategies Microsoft has used in the past to eliminate their competition.

Itรขโฌโขs a well-known fact (painstakingly proven by Microsoft) that among other things you can do to gain market share, you can kill your competition by giving your product for free (or way below the real cost of the product) and forcing people to acquire it through bundling or embedding it with other necessary software that people MUST buy anyway.

Which is one of the reasons why Microsoft has been sued in every country they have sold software. They have engaged always in proven, documented unfair and illegal competition practices; and their "product bundling" practices force consumers to use products that they would have never looked at otherwise. Adobe is doing the same.

Of course, Adobe can say that InDesign sold alone has a street price. But, like everybody else in the field of graphic design, you MUST buy Photoshop, and very likely, Illustrator or/and Acrobat. If you compare the price you must pay for these applications, it becomes cheaper to buy the full Creative Suite. And you get for the same price, InDesign, GoLive, ImageReady, and other things that come bundled in for free.

So the situation is that people are getting InDesign as part of a bundle. In other words, for free. See the price comparison we included to verify this. And donรขโฌโขt forget that the upgrade versions are even cheaper (usually 50% off or more)!.

For reference, just check out the prices: Creative Suite 2 full (includes Photoshop CS2, Illustrator CS2, InDesign CS2, Adobe Bridge, GoLive CS2, Acrobat 7.0 professional, Version Cue CS2, and more. Only for $1119.12, the highest price I found, at:

There are other, much lower prices out there for the full version or the upgrades.

*** Compare with purchasing the individual products: the full cost of the retail versions is:

Adobe Acrobat 1 user: $383.73
Adobe Golive $386.15
Adobe Illustrator $480.67
Adobe InDesign $676.79
Adobe Photoshop $548.51 (only Photoshop + Illustrator are $1030 at these prices)
The value of the retail products is $2475.85. so, InDesign is absolutely FREE.

*** Compare with Quark 6.5 that retails at $707. Upgrades are priced lower.

So, after verifying that in fact we are getting InDesign for "free" and assuming that Quark was successfully muscled out of the market, for how long do you think that InDesign would remain "free"? not long. It would be unbundled right away, and sold separately. Think of programs such as Premiere, etc.

In this market, eliminating your competition means also eliminating the reasons to innovate. Historically, competition proves beneficial to the end user, assuming that it is done with fairness, focusing in product quality to win the user, instead of resorting to a marketing, sales and business strategy to trick the user into "converting".

*** Cost is a part of the equation

Think about it: entities such as universities need to cut costs, and they teach students the software that they will use in their future jobs, so getting the software for free is a HUGE incentive to switch. We have read about some people saying in their advertising-paid columns that several universities (which ones, exactly?) are saying that they will soon switch to InDesign (when will they switch, exactly?). That sounds kinda cheesy given the fact that you need to know Quark to get a job nowadays, anywhere. The reason being manifested is mainly economic, without any practical reasons actually mentioned to justify such a decision. However, that choice will likely mark the future of many designers out there who will likely find themselves subject to having to take additional training courses to learn BOTH programs. Not funny at all.

There is nothing like a "free lunch". So how much does it really cost to "switch"?

*** Training time: Quark 12 hrs vs. InDesign 50+ hours to migrate, 3-6 months learning curve.

In our experience of several years providing training and private/group coaching to hundreds of students in the use of Adobe / Quark software, the average training time required to learn InDesign up to an advanced level, is usually about 32 hours, and involves a much longer training curve to become an expert user (usually 50+ hours) if you donรขโฌโขt have any previous experience with Adobe products, particularly if you need to use the integration features of the Adobe Creative suite (Adobe Bridge, etc.), learn to use third party plugins, styles, compatible features from other Adobe programs, etc.

*** Mastering the program takes at least 3-6 months of use, after receiving full training.

Most people who take InDesign seriously enough to migrate, will spend a lot of time in re-training (see above) and many more months of researching and re-learning things (the dreaded "learning curve") will be spent outside of the training room, figuring out how to do things that they already knew how to do well with Quark. Thatรขโฌโขs some very expensive "converting". Did you know that it was going to be that long? All that lost time is lost productivity, and therefore lost money (and lost nights), too.

Of course some users will tell you that they already know InDesign and it was easy to learn. You bet they were old Adobe Suite users already. Unless they are seasoned pros, with 10+ years in the field, knowing every nook and cranny of most graphic design programs, particularly Adobe programs, it is VERY unlikely it was a short time learning InDesign. But if they are truly novice users, ask them how long it really took them to master (if they do) InDesign. Youรขโฌโขll be surprised at the answers. Most people use barely 20-25% of the program, because learning the whole thing is overwhelming in practice.

Compare this with Quark training, where in barely 8 hours or less you can be working with most program options. Quark advanced level is achieved in 16 hours, and expert level in 24 hours. AND you donรขโฌโขt need experience with other Adobe programs. In our experience, mastery of the program is at your fingertips, since mostly everything you need to do is rather easy to achieve in Quark and there are myriads of tutorials on the Internet documenting every imaginable Quark trick.

In other words, training in InDesign takes 2 - 3 times more than learning Quark. And the learning curve is much higher than Quark, since you need to learn to "integrate" InDesign with other applications that you may or may not know. The novice user will have the hardest time, since he will be expected to learn not only one but at least other 2 or 3 programs (Photoshop and Illustrator, and lately, Acrobat) in order to be able to use InDesign to its fullest potential.

Which is one of the most overwhelming reasons we have seen always for people choosing Quark over InDesign over the years: A kid can use Quark. Itรขโฌโขs easy. In fact, many parts of the interface used by InDesign, are very similar to the one developed by Quark. Adobe decided to do things the way Quark was doing things in order to improve their program.

Why? Adobe had to design something that could be easily related to Quark, in order to facilitate the transition from Quark to InDesign, since PageMaker failed to convert people to Adobeรขโฌโขs way of doing layouts, as it was a lower-end, very expensive and limited program that couldnรขโฌโขt remotely compete with a high-end program such as Quark. For these and other reasons, Pagemaker always played second to the Quark powerhouse, even to programs such as MS Publisher, which are cheaper and more powerful.

*** Training Costs:

Letรขโฌโขs think now about the training costs involved in switching all your designers to the new software. Training costs for 2 people only are more expensive than buying the full Creative Suite 2. That is, from $349 - $800 in average per person, for the 8-hr, 1 day seminar only. Usually 3 days are required, or $2400+ (group) - $5400 (individual), for up to 6 people. In some cases, it can be higher depending on other factors. These are corporate training prices, according to the prices of several schools in New York that provide this training and donรขโฌโขt include advanced or expert training costs, nor do they include the costs of learning additional Adobe programs, or the integration features. So the real cost of learning InDesign is much higher than Quark. Quark, average training price on the streets: $199.

*** Hardware costs:

Now include the cost of buying new computers (since you will need to get a new computer to run InDesign due to the sluggish performance that the new Creative Suite 2 has unless you have a 3 GHZ+ CPU Pentium IV or a MAC G5 with 1 - 2GB RAM or more computer). If you have a 2GHZ and 512mb ram, forget it, your computer is not good enough for the creative suite 2. And donรขโฌโขt even think about installing it on your laptop and run several applications at the same time, or you will be waiting for a very long time to do anything.

Because letรขโฌโขs face it, older computers (letรขโฌโขs say 1 year old) will choke and kill your productivity trying to run the new Creative Suite 2, and waiting for anything to load, and run. You need a new computer to run the software, period. And if someone tries to say otherwise, try to run Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign plus Adobe Bridge at the same time in your laptop, to take full advantage of the "integrated" features of Creative Suite 2. Have fun waiting while your competition is selling to your clients. A new MAC computer with the necessary specs will cost you in average $2000, not including the price of the warranty for your new computer.

So, after totaling the cost of installing and getting your people and equipment up to speed in the migration to InDesign, you will have spent in average about $5000 or more per user, including the licensing and the necessary hardware, etc. This is far, far more expensive than just upgrading to the next version of Quark. If you are a medium-sized company, itรขโฌโขs going to be, letรขโฌโขs say a hundred thousand dollars in training, learning curve, lost productivity expenses, new equipment, and software licenses. If you are a large corporation, your cost is in the millions. Yay!

Did you think about that one yet?

*** Is there truly a reason to switch?

Overall, compelling arguments to choose InDesign over Quark are difficult to find, even among those who have already made the jump. We will see what the new version of Quark brings.

Adobe still has to deal with the WHOLE industry being trained in Quark. It would seem obvious that Quark is wisening up, improving their customer support, asking users what they need, analyzing and creating tools to improve production flow, and thinking ahead in order to bring enhanced, truly compelling productivity features, and this is a good thing for users.

It remains to be seen if people are going to dump their existing life-time expertise, spend their money in new training and invest in new hardware and software to make Adobe feel satisfied about their sales and stock profits.

*** In our view, simplicity wins always.

Adobe wants design professionals to adopt a far more complex, harder to learn, more expensive to run and more difficult to handle program (InDesign) over a simpler, easier to use, and much more intuitive program: Quark. That makes no sense.

We think that INSECURITY is not really a reason to switch. Which is the desired result of the marketing strategy of "the whole industry is moving to InDesign, what are you doing?" that Adobe has been running for several years. Why would you switch otherwise, particularly considering that the upcoming version of Quark is far more powerful and productivity-enhancing than InDesign? We think Quark is living up to their promises and will deliver a superior product. We shall see if they manage to do what they have promised.

Right now, don't buy anything unless you have a very specific and particular need that ONLY InDesign could possibly satisfy, and that will not be provided in an upcoming version of Quark. What might that be?

Make Documenting Your Software Easier Than Ever Before

Here at M6.Net weรขโฌโขve just released our new control panel software, allowing for easier and better control over our clientsรขโฌโข website accounts. It was my task to write the documentation for this new software. After working through it in a traditional word processor application and subsequently producing a final product that was of little use, we came to realize that there needed to be a better way to write a manual, and to release it in multiple formats. One of the lead developers sent a link my way and after trying the evaluation copy of the software I realized that it was the package that we needed. รขโฌหHelp and Manual 4รขโฌโข turns manual writing and distribution into a very simple affair.

The Help and Manual (hereafter known as H&M) homepage (http://www.helpandmanual.com/) states that "Help & Manual makes producing help a pleasure" and this is a fairly accurate little catchphrase. When I first tried the evaluation version or edition 3 a while ago, it frustrated me that I had to copy and paste every page of the manual from the word processor into H&M. This was a daunting task even for our modest sized manual that runs just over 50 pages. With the newer version however, all I had to do was export the document to Rich Text Format and use the import feature in H&M. The software went off and did its thing, returning to me with a nice manual file broken into sections based on the various headings in the document. While there were a few minor layout glitches these were easily solved, and the overall benefit of being able to directly import the manual was a huge timesaver. While it took me 3 shifts (about 4 hours a piece) to import and format the manual manually, with the new version of H&M, I had it all looking and working nicely within a single shift and still had time to edit and modify the document.

The second feature that impressed me greatly was the sheer number of output formats available to the manual writer. The formats include HTML Help, Classic Winhelp, VStudio help, Browser based help (HTML pages), Adobe PDF, MSWord manual and eBook. Thereรขโฌโขs bound to be an option or two that are right for your manual. For us it was perfect. We could create an HTML file for online help, and a downloadable PDF version of the document for offline perusal. Each output style is fully customizable, particularly the document outputs which can be modified with a handy tool called the "Print Manual Designer". This comes included with H&M and allows you to design the overall look of your manual in an easy and self-affirming way.

Iรขโฌโขve spent a while talking about the input and output options, but not the functionality. Iรขโฌโขm pleased to say that the interface is straight forward and all the expected options (or at least all the options that I expected) are included. You control the layout in a tree structure on the left hand side of the screen. This determines the numbering of your sections in the final exported manual. Then there are the many standard formatting options like font attributes, tables, character insertion, image insertion etc, but there are also more unique media options. Itรขโฌโขs possible to embed movie, sound, flash, and other files straight into your manual. This allows you to make a demonstration video illustrating the point the manual is trying to make and include it as part of the documentation. Obviously the viability of this depends upon your chosen output format.

There are a few unique tools that I thought were exceptional concepts. The first is the Syntax Highlighter that allows you to highlight code in your manual to look much the same as code in a development environment. I didnรขโฌโขt actually have reason to use it and test it, but I think the idea is a great one.

The second is the Screen Capture tool. This useful little gadget hides the H&M window and allows you to capture an image of any control or window in an open program by simply holding the Ctrl key and then clicking the window. This image is saved into your images folder and inserted into the manual. Itรขโฌโขs quick and easy to use and saves a lot of time when compared to the alternative method (opening the program, hitting print screen, cropping the image to a desired size, and importing it into the H&M software).

Overall I was very impressed with รขโฌหHelp and Manual 4รขโฌโข. Beyond being a basic conversion tool, it makes it very easy to write your entire manual using just the functionality of the software. Once your information is all inputted there are many customization and layout options to get it looking just how you want it. When youรขโฌโขre done you can output it to many different formats. Help and Manual made writing and distributing our manual quick and easy. Check it out at http://www.helpandmanual.com

Pros:

- Excellent output options
- Comprehensive formatting tools allow complete control of a projectรขโฌโขs look
- Screen capture tool
- Good import options

Cons:

- There can be some formatting errors when importing from a document.
- You canรขโฌโขt select a network folder for your images folder. It is limited to your local hard drive(s).

Score: 4/5

Inventory Management Software

Firms which handle large amounts of inventory prefer to use inventory management software. Effective inventory management means you always know what is in your hand, what you have sold and what you have not. It is a complex task. There are several software programs which help a firm manage their inventory. Some of this software is available for free on the Internet. But it may not fulfill all your needs.

In such a situation, you can purchase inventory management software that suits your business. This software can be purchased offline as well as online. They are easy to use and help even non-IT persons to keep track of their firm's inventory. This software is available in different price ranges.

If you are not able to get suitable ""ready to use"" inventory management software, then you can go for customized software. Many big firms do that. There are several software companies that provide such customized software. They also provide help in training the staff that is purchasing the software, so that they are able to make the best use of the customized software. Customized software is more expensive.

Most inventory management software comes with ""tutorials"" that help one to learn how to use the software. The biggest advantage of inventory management software is that it allows firms to get rid of the paperwork and complex documentation involved in managing the inventory. Your current inventory position will always be just a click away. You can check your inventory from anywhere in the world. That helps ensure that your stores are never over-stuffed with products, and that factories do not face any shortage of raw material.

Inventory Management provides detailed information on Inventory Management, Inventory Management Software, Supply Chain Inventory Management, Inventory Management Systems and more. Inventory Management is affiliated with E-Procurement Services.

Should I Use Windows Update?

Should one use Windows Update?

This topic has good and valid arguments on both sides. Some would say keeping your windows up to date is essential in keeping it free of the newest, worst viruses and the like. Others would say that updating your windows is overemphasized, unneeded and a waste of time.

In the future, Microsoft will have ways of detecting whether your version of windows is actually store-bought, or pirated. With so many copies of pirated windows on the market, such a move by Microsoft is almost required in order to continue cornering the OS market. For instance, when SP 1 (and 2) came out, you had to have an authentic windows serial code in order to download the update. There are of course ways of getting around this, but it deterred much illegal upgrading to the new service packs. Had you have had a pirated copy of windows (and the majority does), then you could have downloaded a copy of windows SP 1/2, but you would have had to completely re-install and possibly format in order to install it.

If you had an original windows serial code that came with the product, you could have just downloaded the packs from the windows update servers.

So yes, having a non-pirated copy of windows is a convenience. However, some would remember a stunning virus that was released not too long ago; MyDoom. It managed to find its ways onto the Microsoft windows update servers. When you got the virus, you would have 30 seconds before the computer shut down. Should you have formatted, just to re-install windows with automatic updates turned on (and they are by default) you would get the virus again.

And not to mention Windows Updates are a large time factor. Some updates (especially the first time you use Windows Update) are colossal, and the download speeds are not always at their greatest. Someone on 56k would have a very hard time using windows update at all (and if you do, I recommend not bothering).

Now, you ask, what exactly is Windows Update? It's simply Microsoft engineers working hard to fix bugs, problems and backdoors in Windows. What are these problems, you ask? Well, when Microsoft released windows it wasn't exactly a perfect OS. With every version of Windows, it becomes more and more hi-tech. But there has always been problems with Windows being insecure.

The only way to find that Windows has a certain vulnerability is first for that vulnerability to be exploited. Eg, Microsoft using white hat hackers (the good guys) to breach windows, or for a hacker to break into a version of Windows and it is reported.

So, to answer the question, is it important to update your windows? It's hard to say, without the answer being a biased opinion. I will give both sides of the argument merit, but it honestly depends on what you want to do with your PC. For large businesses with intranets, windows updates are likely a good idea. It only takes one serious OS fault for a hacker or a bad virus to leak in and infect the whole network. Windows faults and security issues, IE backdoors, etc. Windows update constantly has fixes for these problems.

For a home desktop, even for a home network, windows updates really aren't that important. No one wants to hack the small guy; there is nothing to gain from it. Should you use a simple firewall, even the windows in-house firewall, you are protected from most threats. But big business is always at risk; major websites are constantly under the gun from DoS attacks and IE "tricks." Windows Updates cannot really help DoS attacks, but they can prevent hackers, crackers, viruses and the like from entering their network computers from faults in the windows code.

So to answer the question - should I use windows update? If you've got a lot of infrastructure you want to protect, yes. If you're a small guy, one PC at home, one laptop; even a few computers thrown together in your home network. The answer is no. I don't recommend it, anyway. Just throw on your windows firewall, Black Ice Defender, Norton, Avast....what have you. And enjoy browsing. That's about it.
